The Breckinridge County Airport has undergone a major transformation. When AEI became the Airport’s “Engineer of Record” in 2005, the airport was in extreme decline. With a revitalized Airport Board and an engineering partner excited to “problem solve”, the team went to work. The airport lacked funding and an overall objective. AEI worked with the Board, the FAA, and KDA to plan improvements, receive grant monies and keep projects on track. AEI developed an ALP in 2005, followed the plan to bring the airport to a B-II category, provided guidance in acquiring land, and completed the necessary engineering and geotechnical planning and exploration needed to re-construct a new airport. In the fall of 2014, the airport opened with a completely new 4,000’ x 75’ concrete runway (the first in Kentucky for a GA airport), new apron, LED lighting, and new access. The airport is now a point of pride and bringing new life to the community. Some of the assistance AEI has provided:
• Development of an ALP
• Acquired 50+ acres around the airport to control OFA’s and facilitate construction
• Various RW and safety Improvements to keep open while advancing the final plan
• Land acquisition required to correct transverse Runway Safety Area (RSA) deficiencies and, ultimately, the safety area needed for a new RW and future parallel taxiway
• Acquired grant for more than $4.2 million to begin the re-construction
• Moved 60,000 cy of earthwork for a re-constructed 4,000’x75’ concrete RW and 450’x200’ concrete apron
• Installed all new efficient LED MIRL/MITL (first in KY)
• New LED REIL’s
• New LED PAPI (first in KY)
• New LED windcone
• Installed 13,000 l.f. of chain link fence
